Importance of Ananta Vrata (Celebrated on Bhadrapada Shuddha Chaturdashi) explained by Shri Guru Narasimha Saraswati to the Disciple Sayamdeo which can be seen in Adhyay 43 of Shri Guru Charitra :

Adhyay 43 : Shri Guru Explains the Importance of Ananta Vrata to Sayamdeo

The Ananta Vrata is Celebrated every year on the Bhadrapada Shuddha Chaturdashi.

The Significance of Ananta Vrata was explained by Shri Guru to the Disciple Sayamdeo and his Family. Shri Guru Says him that Lord Shri Krishna advised Pandavas to do the Ananta Vrata during their Exile to get back their Kingdom.

Shri Guru also quotes the Tale which was narrated by Lord Shri Krishna.
Shri Krishna says , Once in the Krita Yuga there lived a Brahmin of Vashishtha Gotra called Sumantu who was married to the Sage Bhrigus daughter Diksha. They had a daughter called Susheele. After some days on the Death of the wife Diksha , the Karma Kriyas of Sumantu stopped because of it and he had to marry with Karkasha. Karkasha always quarreled with them and this dejected Sumantu. Once Koundinya Rishi came there and Sumantu married Susheele with him. Koundinya Rishi stayed there for 2 Masa and soon realized the Conflicts with his wife and Mother in Law and within Some Days he left their home.

On the way the Rishi stopped near a River for Anushthan and Susheele joined the other womens there and Performed Ananta Vrata till her husband returned.

Ananta was Pleased and the Rishi became the Gramadhipati of the Nearby Amaravati Nagar. But once when the two were sitting together Koundinya observed the red string on the wrist of Sushila and asked her whether she is trying to keep him under control using it. Susheele explained the Fact but Koundinya Rishi threw it in fire angrily saying its the Result of his Penance that they had got Prosperity and not because of Ananta.
Lord Ananta became angry and the Rishi lost everything and soon he realized his Mistake and left for the Jungles searching Ananta. Anant was again Pleased with his Devotion and he took him to a Fine City and Showed him his Real Form and Blessed with Prosperity.

Thus the Story was narrated by Lord Shri Krishna to Pandavas and by Shri Guru to Sayamdeo. But Sayamdeo says that Shri Guru himself is Ananta but even then Shri Guru insisted him Saying you must Perform it as Your Gotra is Koundinya only. Sayamdeo Performs the Vrata and also arranges Grand Samaradhana.

Shri Gurudeva Datt !

Who was Siddha Muni ? Mention about Shri Siddha Muni in Shri Guru Charitra :

Adhyay 2 : Namadharak meets Shri Siddha Muni (This Place is now identified as Siddhanal near Ganagapur).

We dont get much details about Siddha Muni in Shri Guru Charitra. All that we know about him is through his Mention in Adhyay 13 that is when Shri Guru was at Prayag he had many disciples, they were Bal Saraswati, Krishna Saraswati, Upendra Saraswati, Madhav Saraswati, Sadanand Saraswati, Dnyanjyoti Saraswati and Shri Siddha as seven chief disciples. This was his First Meeting.

Also he is mentioned at some places like in Adhyay 16 when Shri Guru sent all the Disciples for Pilgrimage Siddha says to Namadharak that he alone Stayed with Shri Guru when he was at Vaijnath and also narrates the Incident of how a Brahmin was told about Guru Mahima.

Lastly he is Mentioned in 52nd Adhay when he says namadharak that 4 Disciples i.e Nandi Narahari Sayamdeo and himself accompanied Shri Guru till Patala Ganga.

If anyone of you remember some more Mention about Shri Siddha Muni plzz do quote them.

Interesting thing is there is a Village named Siddhanal near Ganagapur where Siddha Muni is sopposed to have met Namdharak. and hence the Name Siddhanal. The First 2 Adhyays were narrated at this Place because in Adhyay 3 Siddha Muni takes Namdharak to Bhima-Amarja Sangam at Ganagapur and this can be seen in Shri Guru Charitra.

Shri Gurudeva Datt !

The Details about the Muslim King Alauddin Ahmad Shah 2 (Rajaka in his Previous Birth) mentioned in the Adhay 50 of Shri Guru Charitra ( Also Included are the Picture and Details of his Tomb at Ashtur near Bidar) :

Adhyay 50 :Shri Guru Narasimha Saraswati at the Bidar Fort of the King (Rajaka)

Adhyay 50 :Shri Guru Narasimha Saraswati at the Bidar Fort of the King (Rajaka)

What we Know about the Muslim King (Rajaka in Previous Birth) is only through the Details Mentioned about him in Shri Guru Charitra. As Per most of the Scholars, Shri Narasimha Saraswati lived from Shaka 1300 to Shaka 1380 or 1378 CE to 1458 CE and Period of his Stay at Ganagapur is Sha.1357-1380 (1435 CE-1458 CE). The Muslim King is said to have met Shri Guru just some time before the Avatar Samapti of Shri Guru. Thus it is clear that the King might have met Shri Guru after 1450 only.

The Kingdom of Vidarbha (Bidar) was at this time ruled by Alauddin Ahmad Shah II  who ascended the Throne on Apr 17, 1436 and continued till May 6, 1458 CE.
Thus its clear that it was Alauddin Ahmad Shah II who Visited Shri Guru. Also according to the Historical Records only Alauddin II is said to have suffered of Wound in his Leg (It is said that the King had the Injury in 1453).  The King might have later visited Shri Guru. It is also interesting to know that the Avatar Samapti Year and the Year of the Kings death is Same. i.e 1458.

Alauddin II belonged to the Bahamani Dynasty and he succeeded his Father Ahmad Shah I in 1436.  These Bahamani Rulers were different from the Delhi Mughals and there were four such states which were existing that time viz Berar (Including Mahur), Daulatabad, Bidar and Gulbarga. Many times " Chahu Rashtra (Four States) " term occurring in Shri Guru Charitra possibly points to this.

This king (Alauddin II)  was very moderate and did not destroy temples or old monuments. He also was supposed to be quite friendly towards the Hindu communities. Shri Guru Charitra also states the Same Character of the King.

Entrance_Bidar Fort of the Muslim King Alauddin Ahmad Shah 2 which Shri Guru Narasimha Saraswati Visited

Tomb of the Muslim King Alauddin Ahmad Shah 2 (Rajaka) located at Ashtur near Bidar

It can be Seen in Adhyay 50 of Shri Guru Charitra that Shri Guru asked the Muslim King to come and meet him at Shrishailyam. Shri Guru had also sent his Disciples on Pilgrimage asking them to come to Shrishailyam later to have his Darshan (While at Vaijnath, Adhyay 15). But the Details about Meeting of Shri Guru with Disciples and the King at Shrishailyam is not mentioned in Shri Guru Charitra.

Now that the tomb of the King is located at Bidar means that the King had been to Shrishailyam for the Darshan of Shri Guru and died later on his return to Bidar.

Tomb of the Muslim King Alauddin Ahmad Shah 2 (Rajaka) located at Ashtur near Bidar

Details about the Tomb :

The Tomb of Alauddin Ahmad Shah II (Reign 1436-58), the first son of Ahmad Shah Wali, and who became the 10th sultan after succeeding his father, is situated nearly adjacent to the tomb of his father, Sultan Ahmad Shah, to the west. It is assumed to have been built in 1458. This majestic tomb is also built on a square plan and has a large dome, however, its outside walls have a special feature. The walls are decorated by five arches in different sizes which are framed by black stones. The central arch is the highest and the two arches on the sides are different in height but still maintain symmetry. On the walls, black basolt and tiles are used. The upper part of the arches is decorated uniquely by patterns including diamond shapes, which give a simple tone to the building as a whole and are effective from a decorative standpoint. (Matsuo Ara)

Some Facts about Alauddin Ahmad Shah II (Rajaka)  known through the Historical Records :

Ahmad Shah I (Father of Alauddin II) had been very successful as a king and when he died he was popular even to the extent of being regarded as a
Saint. His son Zafar Khan who assumed the title of Ahmad on his accession. He gave preference to newcomers from outside over the old in his cabinet. This created a great cleavage between them (New Comers) and the Dakhnis (Old Comers). He married the Daughter of Raja of Sangmeswar (Hindu) and gave her the title of Zeba Chehra apart from the daughter of Nasir Khan Faruqi of Khandesh ‘Agha Zainab’.

Alauddin, though generally pious and benevolent, gradually overcame his repugnance to taking life. He used wine himself, but prohibited its use by his subjects, and gamblers and wine-bibbers had iron collars riveted on their necks and were compelled to work as scavengers or set to hard labor on the public works; and those who persisted, despite this discipline, in the use of wine, had molten lead poured down their throats. A grandson of the saint Gisu Daraz, convicted of brawling with a woman of the town, received the bastinado in the market place, and his companion was expelled from the city.

He built his father's mausoleum in Ashutur in the eastern outskirts of Bidar and a mausoleum for a saint, Shah Khalil Ullah, between Ashutur and Bidar. It is also known that he had built a great hospital in Bidar and a garden pavilion of Nimatabad, although they do not exist anymore. It is said that he had a liking for culture, and he did not pay much attention to politics.

The king's benevolence was displayed in the establishment and endowment at Bidar of a hospital where food, drugs, and medical treatment were supplied free of charge, and his piety in his love of long sermons and the destruction of idol-temples, from the materials of which mosques were built. He prided himself also on his love of justice, and added al-Adil (The Just) to his titles. At the end of his reign an Arab merchant who had been unable to obtain payment for some horses sold to officers of the court, and had also been scandalized by the massacre of the Sayyids and other Foreigners at Chakan, sprang up on hearing the king thus described, and cried, "No, by God! You are not just, generous, clement, or compassionate, tyrant and liar! You have
slain the pure seed of the prophet and in the pulpit of the Muslims take to yourself such titles as these!"

The king, weeping bitterly, replied: "They will hardly escape from the fire of God's wrath who give me, in this world and the next, a name as ill as Yazid's". He then retired to his chamber and left it no more until he was borne forth to the grave.

Against his virtues must be set that gross sensuality which his religion permitted, and which he carried to such excess that most of his time was spent among the thousand women collected in his harem, and he so neglected business as to hold a public audience no oftener than once in four or five months.

In 1453 the king received an injury to his leg which confined him to his palace, and rumors of his death were circulated and credited.

Alauddin died in 1458, having some time before designated as his heir his eldest son Humayun, who bore a reputation so evil that his father had been urged to reconsider his decision, which, however, had never been revoked.

Papa Vinashini Teerth / Papnash Shiva Temple at Bidar,Karnataka mentioned in Adhyay 50 of Shri Guru Charitra.

Papa Vinashini Teerth / Papnash Shiva Temple :

Papa Vinashini Teerth / Papnash Temple at Bidar

Shiva Lingam at Papa Vinashini Teerth / Papnash Temple
Papnash Shiva Temple is situated in Bidar district in North-east Karnataka. It is believed that the Shiva Linga idol in this temple is one of those installed by Lord Rama during the time of his journey back from Lanka. A natural spring flows into a pond in front of the temple called Papnasha which means destruction of sins.

Every year, during Shivratri festival lots of tourists visit Papnash Shiva Temple. At the ruins an ancient Shiva Temple along with a New Temple has been built on the slops of the hill. The location of the temple in a valley is mesmerising to the eyes. At the foot of the temple is a cistern measuring 16 ft by 14 ft. The cistern is continuously fed by the natural spring and towards the north there is small tank which is said to be built during Lord Rama s times.

It gets very crowded during Shivaratri celebrations. In the sanctum, there is a big Shiva Linga. In the temple complex, there are three other Shiva Lingas. These Shiva Lingas can be touched by devotees, and they can directly offer pujas to them.

Papnash means destroyer of sins. It is believed that a visit to this temple and a dip in the Papnash pond will destroy all the sins committed by a person. For this reason alone, this temple attracts a large number of pilgrims

How to Get to Papnash Shiva Temple:

The Papnash Shiva Temple is located near the Bidar-Udgir Road. There is a bus station about two kilometers away which is connected to Bidar city from where other transport options can be taken.

Papa Vinashini Teerth Mentioned in Adhyay 50 of Shri Guru Charitra :

Papa Vinashini Teerth Mentioned in Adhyay 50 of Shri Guru Charitra

Papa Vinashini Teerth at Bidar (Karnataka).

Incidents that took Place here :

1) The King Visits the Teerth on the advise of the Brahmins and takes a Holy Dip here. Also he meets a Sanyasi here who narrates the Story of a Ujjaini Brahmin who was Blessed by Rishabha Muni.

2) Shri Guru on the request of the King visits Bidar and Comes to Papa Vinashini Teerth where Sayamdeos Son Naganath comes to meet Shri Guru and also takes him to his Home for a Samaradhana.

3) Shri Guru returns to the Teerth after the Samaradhana and the King who traveled for a Day from Gangapur meets Shri Guru here and takes him to his Kingdom

For Detailed Explanation (According to Adhyay 50 of Shri Guru Charitra ) , Read on ;

The Papa Vinashini (Papnash) Teerth at Bidar is the Holy Place which was Sanctified by the Visit of Shri Guru Narasimha Saraswati. The Account of Shri Gurus visit to Bidar is as Follows :

We can see in the 9th Adhyay of Shri Guru Charitra that Shripad Shri Vallabha blesses a Rajaka (Washer Man) to be a King in his Next Birth and also assures him that he would meet him as Shri Narasimha Saraswati ( The 2nd Incarnation).

Accordingly he (rajaka) takes birth in the Royal Kingdom of Vidarbha. Due to devotation of previous birth he was kind and pious. He treated all religions and sects equally. Thus the king was ruling impartially. Once he had a tumour on his thigh, Vaidyas and Hakims treated him but to no effect. The King then consulted the Local Brahmins who suggested him to take a bath at the Holy Papa Vinashini Teerth there.
The King accordingly visited the Holy Teerth and had a Holy Dip at the Teerth. There he met a Sanyasi who explained him the Importance of Sadguru Darshan and also quoted him the following Story ;

There lived a Brahmin at Ujjaini who gave up his Brahmin Rites and lived with a Prostitute. But once they Served Rishabha Muni with Devotion. Later on in their old age, both the Brahmin and Pingla died.

The Brahmin took birth as a Son of the Eldest Queen of King Vajrabahu. The Young Queen who was Jealous gave poison to the Eldest Queen Sumati when the Baby was in womb. Both the Mother and Son were affected by erruptions all over the body and the King who failed to treat them ordered that they must be left in the Forest. But to their fortune they met a Pious King who arranged for their Stay. But one day the Child died and when the Mother was weeping bitterly. Rishabha Muni recalling the Brahmins Past Service not only revived him to Life but also cured both of them.

Thus the Sanyasi asked the King to Serve a Saint and said that the King should Visit Shri Guru Narasimha Saraswati at Ganagapur. The King immediately went to Ganagapur and visited Sangam to meet Shri Guru. On seeing him Shri Guru asked " O, Rajak, where have you been so far? I am seeing you after a long period". On this the King at once recalled his Past birth and prostrated before Shri Guru and began to shed tears of love and joy. When he wanted to show the Tumour , he found it was already Cured. He then Pleaded Shri Guru to visit his Place. Shri Guru agreed and said him that he would meet him at Papavinashini in Bidar. Shri Guru disappeared Instantly and reached Papavinashini Teerth where Sayamdeos Son visits and takes Shri Guru to his home for a Samaradhana. Shri Guru then comes back to PapVinashini and the King takes him to his Kingdom. Shri Guru then Visits Goutami and returns to Ganagapur.

A Article about Shivaratri Celebrations at Papa Vinashini / Papnash Shiva Temple at Bidar published in the Newspaper "The Hindu".

Crowd during Shiva Ratri Celebrations at Papa Vinashini Temple

Annual Event : The crowd at the Papanash temple on Mahashivaratri in Bidar on Wednesday.

Bidar: Thousands of devotees came to the Papanash temple fair in Bidar on the occasion of Mahashivaratri on Wednesday.
The faithful began queuing up before the temple beside the historical Papanash lake even before sunrise.

Strains of music :

Varkari teams from Maharashtra who came walking from across the border arrived at sunrise. They were singing ‘Abhangs' and devotional songs all through their journey. They camped in tents around the temple, lit a fire and sat around it to warm themselves.

Pundharik Tandle, who had come from Neelanga in Maharashtra said they walked over 200 km to reach Bidar. “A team of 11 members including women and children left the village on Sunday morning,” he said. He sang Tukaram's popular Marathi Abhang ‘Yacha Sathi Kela Hota Attahas' and Eknath's ‘Kaya Hi Pandhari'. They plan to fast on Wednesday, stay awake through the night singing songs, and leave Bidar after the morning prayers on Thursday. Rindavva Machindar, an old woman who was making tea nearby, said she had been visiting the Papanash temple for 22 years now.

The annual fair held on the mountain in front of the temple was colourful, reminding one of a village fair. The temple trust had allotted space to shopkeepers to put up stalls near the temple. There were vendors of all wares here. Despite most devotees fasting on the day of Mahashivaratri, the food stalls did brisk business. They sold ‘susla,' a local delicacy made from puffed rice. Its rival was the‘mirchi pakoda.' Bakkappa Ramgond sold a unique eatable. He cut slices from the Ram Gadde, a sweet root found in the jungles of Khanapur in Bhalki taluk, and sold them for Rs. 2 a piece. Next to him was the snake-charmer Dhoolappa with his son Akash from Aurad. They had brought three baskets full of snakes that they said were caught near the Papanash Lake and Chitta village. A beggar had turned an empty can of baby food into a musical instrument by fixing it with thin steel wire and bamboo.

The authorities had to work hard to control the crowd. The police barricaded the area and restricted vehicle entry. The Department of Women and Child Development put up a stall to sell materials prepared by women's self help groups (SHGs) in the district. The Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya put up an exhibit of pictures and posters about Lord Shiva.

Gouri Hunvi (Pournima) / Kartika Pournima Celebrations at Shri Kshetra Ganagapur :

The Most Grandly Celebrated Festival at Shri Kshetra Ganagapur  “Gouri Pournima” or Kartika Pournima ended on 11/11/2011 which was celebrated with Great Devotion by all the Devotees for 2 Days i.e on 10th and 11th Nov.

The Kartika Pournima is Celebrated because it was on this Day that the Demon Tripura who conquered all the 3 Worlds was Killed by Lord Shiva. And it is Known as Deva-Diwali also.

Lord Shiva Kills Tripurasura

The Celebration at Ganagapur also has an Additional Reason and which can be Seen in the 47th Adhyay of Shri Guru Charitra and is as below :

Adhyay 47 : Ashta Rupa Dharan

While Shri Guru was at Ganagapur once during Deepavali Devotees from Nearby Villages came to Math and requested Shri Guru to Visit their Village. But Shri Guru asked them to Mutually decide as to whose place should he Visit, the Disciples started to argue within themselves and thus the Kind Shri Guru decided to Satisfy all and called each of them separately and said that he would Visit him only and that not to say this to anyone.

The Day of Dhanatrayodhashi arrived and the Great Compassionate Shri Guru assumed 8 Forms and Visited each of them and also stayed at Ganagapur.

Later during the Kartika Pournima all the Disciples again gathered at the Math for the Occasion of Deeparadhana and each of them Started Saying that Shri Guru Visited  them during Deepavali and started showing the Things they gave Shri Guru. Thus everyone Realised that Shri Guru assumed 8 Forms to Bless all of them.

This Occasion was Grandly Celebrated by them and this continues to be Celebrated till this Very Day and is One of the Major Festival at Shri Kshetra Ganagapur.

Celebrations :

On the First Day the Palakhi of Shri Guru Narasimha Saraswati Maharaj leaves Nirgun Math at around 12pm and is taken to the Bhima-Amarja Sangam with a Single Stop at Vishranti Katta. Devotees are allowed to take the Darshan till 10pm. At around 9pm the Aarti starts and continues for an Hour after which at 10pm the Palakhi leaves Sangam and reaches  Nirgun Math at around 12.30. On the way Bhajans are done in front of the Palakhi. The Palakhi stops at 2 Places for a while i.e Vishranti Katta (The Place where Shri Guru used to Relax) and the Sati Katta (where the Young Lady Savitri from Mahur found her Husband Dead). All through the way after Sati Katta the Womens of the Village offer Aarti to Shri Guru.
